Tools and Materials Needed
Tools
• Sewing Machine with fresh needle appropriate for your fabric choices
• Sharp fabric scissors
• Hemostats or other tool for turning and stuffing the body
• Long doll needle and strong thread for closing the seam openings (or fabric glue)
• Wire Cutters and Pliers for working with armature wire
• Pins or clips to hold fabrics together while stitching
• Fabric marking pen or chalk (for marking pattern placements)
• Tape measure or ruler
• Fabric Glue: Fabri-tac™ works well. Also, Surebonder® fine tip hot glue gun with their fabric glue sticks work very well.
Materials
• Fabrics – 1/3 yard of 45” to 60” wide stretch fabric or fleece per Crow. (See pattern layout – you might be able to squeeze 2 Crows from 1/3 yard of 60” wide fabric.)
• Black fleece is best suited for this project. You may also use other black stretch or non-fray fabrics with this pattern to get a different look. Woven fabrics could also be used if you want a frayed raw edge on wings and tail for a more raggedy-looking crow.
• Lightweight tear-away stabilizer, (Sulky® Tear-Easy™ works well)
• Wing and & tail stiffener – you have two options:
- Use regular quilt batting
- Or use Annie’s™ Soft & Stable™ foam interfacing which gives a sturdier wing with more puffiness.
• Machine Sewing thread for top thread and bobbin. It’s suggested your top and bobbin color match your fabric, but you could choose contrasting thread if you prefer
• Fiberfill Stuffing for body
• Glass beads for eyes – size 6/0 for small beady eyes, or size 2/0 for larger eyes. You could also use button or jewels for a different look.
• 1/16” aluminum armature wire or 16 gauge aluminum wire –
- 6 feet (183 cm) for the standing crow,
- 1.5 feet (46 cm) for flying crow
• (Optional) Floral tape or other soft tape to cover Standing Crow’s legs and feet. Electrical tape is also useful for covering sharp ends of wire.
• (Optional) Acrylic or latex paint to cover Crow legs and feet on Standing Crow.
