IF you have an embroidery machine, you may prefer the In-the-Hoop version of this pattern, also available at Ballyhoo Creations.

Design Sizes
  • The finished height of the puppet is 9” but with hat extended (stuffed or wired)  it’s closer to 16” tall.
  • Body/head circumference is 10 inches. To ensure your hand will fit – measure around your fist to be sure it measures less than 10 inches across the widest part.
Skill Level

Don’t let those little toes scare you!  I’ll show you an easy method for sewing tiny curves.

Estimated time to complete: 2 to 4 hours

Tools and Materials Needed

Tools
• Sewing Machine with fresh needle appropriate for your fabric choices
• Sharp fabric scissors, including a small pair for detail cuts on the feet and toes
• Utility scissors for cutting paper pattern and rigid mouth-plate
• Hemostats or other tool for turning and stuffing feet
• Long doll needle and strong thread for hand stitching (can also use fabric glue)
• Pins or clips to hold fabrics together while stitching or gluing
• Fabric marking pen or chalk
• Fabric Glue: Fabri-tac™ works well. Also, Surebonder® fine tip hot glue gun with their fabric glue sticks work very well for puppets. (you can also hand-stitch everything instead of glue)
Materials
• Fabrics:

  1. Fleece or Luxe Fleece with some stretch: 1/3 yard for head/body, and hat
  2. Mouth Fleece: 2 pieces of black, pink, or red fleece for mouth, each 5” x 7” (13 cm x 18cm)
  3. Skin-tone Stretch knit: less than ¼ yard
  4. Two pieces 5” x 7” (13 cm x 18cm) for feet
  5. One piece 3” x 3” (8cm x 8cm) for nose
  6. (Optional) A scrap of non-fray material for the tongue (fleece, felt, scuba neoprene or fun foam will all work for the tongue)
  7. Faux Fur: 7” wide by 5” long (18cm x 13cm) for the beard. Mongolian or Crinkle fur which are long and curly have the best look and are used in these instructions.

• Lightweight Tear-away stabilizer such as Sulky® Tear-Easy™ (sold at fabric stores or online) less than one yard is needed.

• Rigid mouth-plate: 7” x 4” piece of rigid material such as cardboard, mat-board, foam-core, 1/8” rubber gasket (←my favorite!), piece of plastic storage tub, plastic placemat, or similar material to make the mouth firm and easy to move.
• A few inches of duct tape, bookbinder tape or similar for the rigid mouthplate
• Fiber fill stuffing for the feet
